I haven't even verified chlorinating benzoate, and I already started thinking about chlorinating rosinate. Rosinate is a salt of colophony resin acids, which mostly consist of abietic acid. This has a ring, and not one, three. It does not require much imagination to suspect this acid can be chlorinated the same way as benzoic. To even consider the chlorination, the rosinate salt must be soluble in water. To test this, I set up a crude experiment: arbitrary amounts of sodium hydroxide, water and colophony powder were mixed together. The rosin melted. And not from the heat. It turned into viscous heterogenous blob, that floats in the solution (less dense than the solution). But most importantly, the aquaeous layer turned yellow, indicating that something has indeed dissolved, and there is somewhat less of the blob than initially. Even if the chlorination is not possible, or the product is useless, I will still have a new anion to play with. |

Continuing the rosinate. Treating powdered rosin with concentrated NaOH solution seems to turn it into a thick, semifluid blob which is not miscible with the hydroxide solution. However the substance giving the rosin it's amber colour seems to leech out into the solution. The immiscible fraction can be easily taken out of the solution. This substance fully dissolves in fresh water. After adding table salt into the second solution, pale precipitate forms. After filtering, this pale substance turned into kind of resin while drying. |

Copper rosinate obtained. The rosin was first dissolved in warm dilute solution of NaOH. After letting it settle, amber solution was decanted. Solution of copper sulphate was then mixed into the amber rosin solution. A thick blue precipitate formed. Resulting sludge was then diluted with water under stron stirring. The precipitate was filtered and washed with acetic acid. Properties of the product: is blue, after drying it is less blue it's melting point lies below it's decomposition temperature. |

2010B: Abietic ... 4 Sulfur ... 1 NaClO3 ... 3.1 KClO3 ... 14.1 Ethanol. Burns poorly, the rest of the composition was repurposed for a flare. |

2010C: Abietic ... 5 Charcoal ... 2 NaClO3 ... 3 KClO3 ... 22.2§ Ethanol I am considering abandoning binding of the composition with the Abietic acid / ethanol, and instead adding small amount of Dextrin / water. The sticky rosin is unpleasant to work with and dries slowly. |
